Are you exploring how to incorporate foldable templates into your science teaching? The petal fold is a great tool to help students to record information in a hands-on way. When completed, the foldouts can be inserted into an interactive science notebook or lapbook.
What is a petal fold?
A petal fold template consists of a central shape, with tabs around the outside (the petals) that fold inward. The number of petals is usually between 3 and 6 – you could have more but they’ll become smaller the more petals you add, making it difficult to write on them.
This type of activity is great for all ages, developing fine motor and cutting skills in younger learners, and providing students with an interesting way to display learning or organize their research.

How a petal fold is used
In the center: Create a prompt for children to respond to.
On the petals: Children write or draw their responses on the petal tabs.
Students then cut around the outside of the template and fold the petals inwards. Petals can then be lifted to reveal the information underneath!
Ideas for using a petal fold in primary or elementary science
The petal fold can be used in most subjects. Here are some ideas for using them in science with younger learners:
- The five senses: Use a template with 5 petals and have children write or draw each of their senses on a petal.
- Animal adaptations or features: Draw an animal in the center and write an adaptation or feature on each of the petal tabs.
- Classification: Label each petal with an animal group (e.g. mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, insects). If space allows, add the features of each to the petals.
- Life cycles: Draw or write the names of an animal/plant in the middle of the template, then add its life cycle stages, in order, to the petals.
- Forces: Label each petal with a force (e.g. gravity, friction).
These are just some ideas but you can use petal foldouts for many areas of your science teaching!

Try a petal fold template
Want to use using petal folds with your class? This free PDF download has a selection of blank templates to try. Print onto paper or card and give children a prompt for the middle. They can then cut out the template and fold inward along the dotted lines.
